How is an LED light environmentally friendly, and who says so?
There are two ways that Homie’s light bulbs help to create an environmentally-aware alternative for lighting. The first is that LED lights (Light Emitting Diodes) are focussed on using as little energy as possible while creating as much light as is needed. Each Diode generates 9 times more light from one Watt of electricity than conventional light fixtures. This means that to light up the same room, LEDS use 90% LESS electricity than incandescent or energy saving (CFL) bulbs.
The second way in which LEDs contribute to a ‘greener’ light is that they are not made to be replaced as often as other light bulbs. By customers having to buy new globes every couple of months to replace different fixtures, factories are forced to manufacture more and more globes to satisfy the demand for cheap (replaceable) lighting. This manufacturing process uses energy from coal fired power stations that contribute massively to air and water pollution as well as contributing to the filling up of landfills.
How stuff works Magazine tested how much pollution is added to the earth’s atmosphere by running one incandescent light bulb for one year:
|Pollutant||Total for Power Plant||One Light Bulb-Years’ Worth|
|Sulphur Dioxide – Main cause of acid rain||10,000 Tons of coal||5 Pounds of coal|
|Nitrogen Oxides – Causes smog and acid rain||10,200 Tons of coal||5.1 Pounds of coal|
|Dioxide – Greenhouse gas suspected of causing global warming||3,700,000 Tons of coal||1852 Pounds of coal|
In fact, the American Congress adopted energy standards for the Screw in or Edison bulb. Starting in 2012, “these standards will phase out the inefficient incandescent light bulb that dates back more than 125 years, and require new bulbs to use 25 to 30 % less energy. The transition to more efficient light bulbs will provide massive consumer, public health, and economic benefits”. The European Union is also phasing out incandescent light bulbs in their effort to cut energy waste. According to www.europa.eu press release, EU citizens will save close to 40 TWh (equivalent of the yearly output of 10 power stations of 500 megawatts) and will lead to a reduction of about 15 million tons of CO2 emission per year!
By looking into cheaper ways to effectively light up cities, even the city of Sydney in Australia has made the move to more efficient lighting alternatives. Public lighting accounts for one-third of the City of Sydney’s annual electricity bill and a large part of its greenhouse gas emissions.
The City council has outlined their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 70% – and installing LEDs is a major step towards reaching this goal. “We have already saved almost $300,000 and reduced energy use by more than 25% since March 2012, with the City’s roll out of more than 2,600 energy efficient LED (light-emitting diode) street and park lights across the local area” said the City of Sydney’s representative council. LED lights produce a light that appears brighter than traditional street and park lighting and have been installed in central Sydney, Glebe, Darlinghurst, Zetland, Pyrmont, Kings Cross, Newtown and Redfern.
The City has announced it will replace about 6,500 conventional lights with LEDs over the next 3 years as they use 40% less electricity (in manufacture) than conventional bulbs and produce 40% less carbon pollution. New York, London and Hong Kong joined Sydney in another LED trial arranged by the international environment collective, the Climate Group. More than 90 per cent of people surveyed by the City said they found the new lights appealing and three-quarters said the LEDs improved visibility.
